AHS Choir Auditions: A learning opportunity
Each year the rosters for Cantori, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers are determined in the spring for the coming school year. Freshman and Varsity Madrigals are selected in the fall. These auditions are a comprehensive collection of skills students gain through daily participation in choir.
Successful completion of an audition can be interpreted differently based on the student.. For some students, success is felt when they make it through the audition without catastrophe! For others, they are heart-broke unless it was perceived perfectly. And yet others define their experience by the outcome: did they make it?
Understanding the desire for achievement and membership, we have the opportunity to celebrate and share disappointment with students as they react to the ensemble placement that they have been assigned. As educators, we want success for each of the students, however, success in the minds of teachers can often mean something different from a student's definition.
We believe strongly that vocal success is a journey not a destination. It is up to the Directors to determine the ensemble placement for each student based upon their audition scores, not upon their level of passion, emotion, and desire. We work diligently and sincerely to place each student into the ensemble that best serves his or her individual needs and the goals of this educational program.
Auditions for the Cantori and Concert Choirs will take place in early May. As your child anticipates and reflects upon these upcoming auditions, please support them in what can feel like an overwhelming and risky experience. We believe that each student learns from every opportunity, good or bad, successful or failed. Every opportunity makes us more prepared for the next. We look forward to another amazing year of singing in the Armstrong Choirs.
