General Information:
Independent vocal instruction is a valuable tool for young singers to discover their full potential. While private lessons are not a required part of the vocal music curriculum at Armstrong, they are highly encouraged and available to all our students. Nearly one-fourth of all Armstrong choir students currently enroll in private voice lessons. In addition to the personal and musical benefits of lessons, students will receive choir letter points for their consistent participation in studio. Why? One-on-one instruction allows for careful investigation of the student’s voice, opportunity for vocal growth, and appropriate literature selection. A consistent lesson schedule develops a beneficial regimen of practice, discipline and vocal aptitude. Students will have the opportunity to perform in master classes, recitals, and state solo/ensemble contests during the school year. Students can work to prepare for honor choirs, college scholarship auditions, MN All-State Auditions, and other competitive events. Regular practice will maximize a student’s vocal development. Where? Students study solo voice after school in the practice rooms at Armstrong High School. When? Students often take one lesson per week for 30 minutes. Study in a private studio is a commitment on the part of the teacher, student, and parents. Therefore, it is expected that this arrangement between the above parties will be maintained for a minimum of one semester. Studying for longer periods or bi-weekly rotation may be available. How? Costs for each lesson are determined by the studio teacher. It is expected that lessons are pre-paid at the beginning of each month. Payments must be made directly to the private teacher. Available funds from an individual student choir account may be used to pay voice teachers by completing a Choir Account Withdrawal by the student. It is the student’s responsibility to complete this form in a timely manner. Students may be responsible for payment of accompanist fees when needed. Scholarship money, provided by the Armstrong Choir Boosters, is available for families who demonstrate financial need and may cover up to one-half of the cost of lessons for Armstrong singers. After filling out the Digital (google) Private Voice Lesson Registration Form, the music faculty will match the student to a teacher to best fit his or her schedule. Students may indicate on the lesson form a preference for a specific voice teacher. Students who have already studied with a voice teacher will have priority in returning to his or her studio. What? Appropriate literature for each student will be chosen by the instructor. In accordance with copyright laws and Minnesota State High School League rules, each student is expected to purchase any necessary materials. A temporary photocopy of music, for initial study purpose, may be given to the student with the understanding that an original copy will be purchased immediately. All contests require students to perform with an original copy of their own. |
